Those lofty expectations are a byproduct of die mentality Williams has instilled in his players.
“Our goal is to be the best offense and the best defense in the district,” Williams said. “You always aim for perfection, but you never achieve it. You have to set your goals high or you will settle for less.”
This season, the Panthers will look to improve an offense that yielded just 12 points per game. Williams plans to run the triple option flexbone offense, a run-oriented attack that is often associated with the USl Naval Academy. In fact, that’s where Williams learned the offense. A few years ago, he took a trip to Annapolis, Md., to learn the system from Navy Coach Paul Johnson, who is considered the mastermind of the triple option.
