A vent in the roof at Trading Post Guns served as the entry point for a burglary in which several handguns were stolen from the firearms store.
On the morning of July 20, Trading Post owner Ken Carter discovered that his shop near of the Town of Washington had been burglarized.
He said the person or persons responsible for the crime likely broke in the night of July 19, as a neighbor heard some noise at the property that evening. Carter’s store had been closed since July 17.
The shop’s Sonitrol security alarm did not sound during the break-in, Carter said.
After the crime, Sonitrol technicians confirmed that the alarm was functional. They are investigating why it did not sound during the burglary.
The Sonitrol system at Trading Post is a professional system commonly used by banks, Carter said.
He is now locking up all firearms in a vault when the store is closed and is considering enhancing his security system. Before the burglary, he left all his guns on display racks overnight.
