For some people, prolonging life at any cost in the face of terminal illness is not desirable. This leaves them to seek legal ways to voice their preferences about the way they die. Many turn to an “advance directive,'’ which is a legal document that contains instructions about a person’s future medical care in the event that he or she is incapacitated. A “living will” specifies what treatments a person does (or does not) want in case of a terminal illness, coma, or other near-death experience. A “health care proxy” designates a person to make decisions for the person who cannot speak for him- or herself. It is important to discuss these issues with your family.
