As a union organizer I had learned that when you are doing something controversial, keep a low profile. Thus, as people joined me, in 1969 to help me create an intentional community in Rappahannock County, I discouraged interaction with the larger community. This was probably a mistake. I failed to realize how many people, here, would have been interested in what we were doing. Instead we were labeled a hippie commune and wild rumors were spread about us which may still be whispered today thirty years later.
