First, an apology for not having a column for the past two weeks - sorry about that. Your writer was zonked out on drugs in the days prior to the deadline. Perhaps it would be better if I said that, following knee replacement surgery, I chose pain killers and sleep, over consciousness and productivity. From those who have limped this way before me, I hear that my recovery will be slow, but steady, and that there is a healing light at the end of the tunnel of pain. Many good citizens of Rappahannock have stopped by with nourishing meals, words of compassion and encouragement, and general news. It is good to be a part of such a caring community.

Having spent five days in the hospital, I have learned much about patience, understanding and gratitude. I don’t think that hospital workers get the accolades they deserve. Nor do I think that caregivers in general receive adequate words of appreciation from those on the receiving end of their care. Even though I experienced some “glitches” dining
