The conclusions she readies about herself are most interesting to me and she enumerates ffiem with great specificity; comparisons between inner and outer freedom and constriction, the value and cost of spending so much time alone, ambivalence surrounding pros and cons of dependence, how a person makes her own rules. The steps by which she creates herself at Nethers parallel the community’s growth. Each is a structure of strength and fragility, hard to live in, hard to leave. Each takes tremendous perseverance. As she says, “I retreated into my cornfield, where rows of identical plants were straight, regular, and I could reel in my imagination, coiling it like a rope that has no use...I had to be steady and straight, face turned to the sun, clutching my handful of dirt.”
