We had about five paying students and six of our own children when two sheriffs came to advise me that I was about to be charged with breaking the state’s compulsory education laws, and that I would be liable not only for my own three daughters but for all the children under my care.
Happily we found a pro-bono lawyer who argued successfully that “everything that happens at Nethers is school.” This included washing dishes with a PhD in Philosophy, gardening by the side of a published poet, speaking up at community meetings, helping to cook our meals or to produce a school play.
