and an intriguing question. For instance, the show’s postcard announcement features Underexposed. We see six pairs of women’s underwear drying outdoors on a line. These are universal symbols of intimacy but we remain unacquainted with their wearer. Normally we see the person and its their underwear that’s hidden, but Walz van Ness turns the tables. Here we are shown someone’s private garments but we’re not allowed access to the individual. Similarly in Lost and Found we see pairs of shoes arranged in a line. We are reminded of footwear reverently left outside a mosque or other sacred space for the purpose of joining together in worship. The empty shoes come together and form a unified group but what are the owners doing? Are they also unified in some activity or are they physically and spiritually disconnected?
When looking at a jigsaw puzzle our eyes are trained to ignore the meandering lines between the pieces. If we focus on just those lines we lose sight of the picture.
