At one point we sought the use of the high school auditorium to offer a series of lectures on solar energy. The school was troubled by this request expressing fear that then other community groups would want to use the school too. Peter Kramer, then mayor of Washington, and George Davis, then commonwealth attorney, both wrote letters to the school encouraging them to agree. But at the next school board meeting fear was expressed that the lectures on solar energy might start a riot!. We left incredulously to find Sheriff John Walker Jenkins outside who told us to tell the school board that he would promise to keep the peace even if he weren’t paid to do it! Then J. J.
