Colonel D.M. Slane, Superintendent of the Department of State Police, confirmed today the selection of Captain R. L. Suthard to command the new Seventh Division to be headquartered at Alexandria.
Colonel Slane said that the division, in planning for several years and approved at Governor Dalton’s request by the 1980 General Assembly, will include counties of Loudoun, Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William. It will become operational July 1.
"Because of the density of population and the high volume of traffic in Northern Virginia,” said Colonel Slane, “we have been aware of the need to establish a division headquarters in the Alexandria area for a number of years. However, a project of this magnitude does take considerable planning with regard to funding, staffing and—most important—serving the best interests of Virginia’s citizens.
“We also are very fortunate to be able to transfer Captain Suthard, at his request, to head up the new division. He gained invaluable experience as commander of our Second Division headquarters at Culpeper from March 1977 to August 1979 and is thoroughly familiar with the area.”
Captain Suthard, the Department’s Property and Finance Officer since August 1979, has been with the Department since April 1954. He is a native of Calieo.
