We urge Rappahannock voters to mark “yes” on their ballots in Tuesday's referendum on the method of appointing school board members.
“It's time for a change. For too long, we’ve had individuals whose priority is not quality education controlling appointments to the school board. For too long, the electoral trustees have ignored the expressed wishes of the pikiple.
And what can we do? Nothing.
The trustees were appointed by a judge, since retired, who was himself appointed by the General Assembly years ago. Under this system, who answers «>to the people? Where’s the accountability?
Giving authority for school board appointments to the board of supervisors is the only other option allowed under current Virginia law. If the referendum passes and the supervisors name school board members, we won’t see sweeping, overnight changes. Rappahannock is always slow to move—whether on a comprehensive plan, cars for the sheriff's department, a fire escape for the court house, a building inspector or the provision of an adequate public education. Change will come slowly with the board of supervisors but it won't come at all with the electoral
