now using, i nis system puts the responsibility on the executive board of our county, the Board of Supervisors, and the supervisors are directly responsible to the people.
This is a move in the direction of democracy, a system of the people, by the people and for the people, directly in line with our heritage. 1 have heard it said by those who oppose such a change that this will put the schools of our county directly in the political arena.
Let me say, this, I have worked in the middle of the politics of this county in the last few years and the center of attention has been our schools. It boils down to hard economics and the control of the budget of our county. The schools, for those of you who may not know, make up 75 to 80 percent of the total county budget.
The Supervisors should have the responsibility of appointing the school board members. The supervisors are politically responsible to the citizens and the voters. That is democracy. That is what Rappahannock County should be.
