Cox figured the increase to the sheriffs department budget will amount to only $6,000 with the cars. He estimated travel at $3,000, price of autos $15,000, repairs $3,000, gas and oil $11,000 and liability insurance at $2,500, basing the amounts on Madison County sheriffs department expenses.
From the total of $34,500, the state will reimburse approximately $18,000, according to Cox. In addition, he noted, the county won't have to pay $9,000 in mileage fees included in the proposed budget.
“Actually, you’ll be better off financially with county cars,” Cox told the supervisors, adding that state reimbursement should be higher next year. "We’re talking about increasing the total budget $6,000 to buy three cars,” he concluded.
“Three cars for a $6,000 investment—I don’t think we can go wrong on that," said Gilkey.
