BLACKSBURG—An old fashioned chore may be back in style again. Traditional spring cleaning needs to include the fireplace too, both for safety and looks, said Rosemary C. Goss. Virginia Tech Extension specialist in home management.
First, the chimney should be cleaned by a professional, especially if a woodbuming stove is inserted in the fireplace or in the fireplace flue. There is more creosote built up in the chimney with a wood-burning stove than with a regular fireplace. For safety, the creosote should be cleaned from the chimney.
After the chimney cleaning, remove the ashes from the fireplace opening. Scoop out the major portion, then use a vacuum cleaner to remove those that remain.
