Auto travel declined marginally while commercial truck and bus traffic climbed almost 5 per cent on Virginia’s major roads last /ear, the State Department of Highways and Transportation said this week.
In its annual report on traffic counts, the department said that although autp traffic dropped only 0.5 of 1 per cent, the downward trend Proke an almost steady growth pattern dating back »ome 35 years.
Only in 1974, when gasoline was scarce because jf the Arab oil embargo, had passenger car travel declined n the years since World War [I. Ordinarily, it has inrreased about 5 to 6 per cent innually. The decrease apparently esulted from concern about gasoline supplies during the iummer, efforts of some motorists to conserve fuel, ind substantially higher fuel prices.
