Common examples of teenagers following this practice are:
—if I get an “F” on a test I can have a few drinks and I won’t feel as badly.
—if the boy I have a crush on fails to ask me to the dance. I can take a pill and it won't matter.
—if I feel awkward and foolish at a party 1 can smoke a joint and become the life of that party.
—if the team loses the game I can get drunk.
—if my parents are hassling me, I can get stoned.
The problem with a young person’s use of these moodaltering chemicals is that heshe tends to miss many of the important lessons that should be mastered. A teenager experiences many tensions and if he-she consistently reduces these tensions artificially he-she loses the ability to reduce them naturally. Also, if decisions and their consequences are drug-effected the teenager tends to learn considerably less from the experience.
