With normal increased sex drives, social interactions with members of the opposite sex become important and appropriate ways of relating to boys-girls must be learned.

All of these changes are taking place more or less simultaneously and the failure to learn the proper lessons can cause difficulties in later life.

Teenagers learn these lessons through trial and error—at times being successful and at times falling flat on their faces. There is no easy way to do it and temporary failures and mistakes are part of the process. Some of the greatest lessons are learned through mistakes and failures, yet these setbacks tend to produce anxiety. It is the “School of Hard Knocks" and it can be tough.

There is a lot of tension during this period and at times all teenagers feel depressed, angry, upset and fearful. How teenagers cope with these feelings and what lessons they draw from them are very important, for these lessons are carried over into adult life and provide the insight that will enable them to cope with adult problems.

A particular problem today’s teenagers face is the common belief that we’re supposed to feel good all of the time. When this unrealistic goal isn’t achieved because of normal problems there is a growing tendency to take something to make us feel better.
