A record $23.5 million was spent by the Department of Highways and Transportation for snow and ice removal from state roads last
winter and some bills are still coming in.
Last week workmen still were cutting tree limbs that fell during an October snowstorm in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Also, last week, budget-makers for the department’s maintenance
division ' already were requesting bids for the purchase of snow-clearing salt for next winer.
