After Robert Eastham pointed out that the superintendent had been directed to have the proposal at the last meeting, Bloomer explained that he'd received Kerry’s report at the same time as the school board. Until he had some idea of what the state department might approve, there was no sense in bringing a proposal to the board that wouldn’t meet state department criteria for funding, he said.
He did however, have figures to back up his recommendation against double kindergarten shifts, the other half of the proposal requested by the board.
Running two half-day sessions would require three buses running an additional 100 miles each at a cost of 55 cents per mile, according to the superintendent. Counting transportation costs, bus driver pay and the loss in state funding for not providing a full-day kindergarten program, the extra expense would amount to 548,229. ‘‘So I can’t recommend the change,” Bloomer concluded.
Eastham suggested tabling a decision on split shifts until Bloomer submits the other half of the requested proposal, a plan for “dividing up one of those two mammoth rooms” currently used by for EMR and TMR classes. If Bloomer can solve the problem of “the famous 14 children coming back from Piedmont, I will not vote for a split shift kindergarten," Eastham concluded.
Plans For July 4
Rappahannock Farmers’ Market is mkaing plans to participate in the July Fourth celebration in the Town of Washington. George Wallsworth will chair a committee composed of Marie Atkins and Jane Cooper to make plans.
Guest performer at the market this Saturday, June 14, will be Jeanne Drevas of Sperryville, who will give a demonstration of basket weaving.
