All age groups will be included in the accidents with the predominant groups being those in the 15-24 and 25-64 age brackets. Those under age 15 will account fot a considerable number of injuries also.
“Many of those injured will not actually be involved in using lawn mowers, but will only be present where a mower is being used,” said Glen H. Hetzel, Extension safety specialist at Virginia Tech. “Most of these injuries can be prevented if a few rules are followed and precautions taken.”
The Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty member said that the following rules are intended to reduce the chances of injury when power mowers are being used.
—Walk over the area to be mowed before starting and remove sticks, stones, bones, toys, bottles and cans, and other trash.
