He acknowledged that he'd supplied information on size guidelines for classrooms, library and other school areas but stated that he hadn't given Masterson the figure of 40 students to divide into the room size to determine square feet of area needed per child. "Forty is not a legitimate class size to divide by." he maintained, noting that the average allowable class size under Standards of Quality is 25 pupils. Even physical education classes, usually the largest class groups in a school, rarely exceed 30 students, according to the building supervisor.
New school board member Newbill Miller asked Hamill if he knew of consulting firms that conducted studies to determine maximum utilization of space.
Hamill acknowledged that firms of this type have done work for schools throughout the state but noted that the state department, as a matter of policy, will not recommend a particular firm.
Eastham reported that there are differences of opinion in the community as to whether the high school needs additional space. The current school board, in addressing the capital outlay issue, is following a logical series of steps, the first of which was to measure "exactly what we have," said Eastham. "It’s the first time that’s ever been done," he claimed.
"We have to know how we're using the space we have. . . In other words, what is going on in the schools," Eastham continued. Towards this end. he said, the board has appropriated $7,000 for a "totally independent person"
