We think the supervisors will listen to the voice of the people when it’s time to act on school board vacancies. The electoral trustees have shown time and again that they won't.
But if the county’s elected officials refuse to give more than lip service to the principles of democracy, if they, like the trustees, ignore the people’s choice in favor of appointing school board members whose first allegiance is to low property taxes, then we have recourse. We can elect officials who will listen to their constituents.
Least anyone misunderstand, we’re not for skyrocketing taxes that result from unlimited school spending. We don’t think Rappahannock schools should provide tennis courts, indoor swimming pool or five years of Latin, Spanish, Russian, German, French and Greek. But we must give our children an adequate education and to do that, we need science laboratories with water and gas, teachers who stay for more than one or two years and enough course offerings so that students don’t have to be pressured to take study hall because nothing else is available.
For the hope of an adequate educational program in Rappahannock County, vote “yes” in Tuesday’s referendum. Our children will thank us for it later.
