Altogether, all types of vehicles traveled an average of 58, 487,000 miles a day on Virginia’s 8,670 miles of interstate, arterial, and primary routes. Combined travel by all types of vehicles—cars, trucks, and buses—was up about 1 per cent.
Compared to 1978, travel by Virginia-registered cars increased last year from 58.7 per cent to 59.8 per cent of the total traffic. Travel by out-of-state cars using Virginia roads declinded from 14.5 per cent to about 12.4 per cent of the total, Reflecting a dropoff in longdistance trips.
