At the elementary school, the primary class for younger mentally retarded students includes four trainable mentally retarded (TMR) and four educable mentally retarded (EMR) students. Although the combination w"as approved by the state department in a one year waiver with the proviso that a full time aide be employed. Kerry noted that the needs of the trainable mentally retarded are very different from the needs of EMR students.
"Have you ever tried to instruct a two or three year old child with an eight or nine year old?" she asked. ‘‘There’s that much difference." According to Kerry, trainable mentally retarded youngsters must be taught self-help skills to care for their personal needs while educable mentally retarded need more academically oriented instruction. "You cannot look at the size of a child. You have to look at what he can learn," Kerry said. To combine the two groups takes "a very unusual teacher." she added.
