Doug Nichols, 17-year-old RCHS senior, leaves later this month for an adventure of a lifetime as part of the Lions International Youth Exchange program.
After returning home from his summer abroad, young Nichols will enroll in the Naval ROTC program at VMI, majoring in civil engineering. academic average throughout high school and has been active in varsity baseball and drama. Doug had the lead in the senior class play Blithe Spirit.
He is president of the Senior Class, on the staff of the RCHS annual and a member of the National Honor Society. He has been a boy scout for six years, and has attained the Eagle rank.
Nichols will deliver a club banner from the Rappahannock Lions to the Lions Club at Alvdal, Norway, where his host family lives.
Doug, son of Paul and Charlotte Nichols of Flint Hill, is this year’s winner of the Rappahannock Lions Club’s travel scholarship and a place in the International Youth Exchange program.
He will fly to Oslo to spend a month with a Lions Club host family on their cattle and timber farm in Southeast Norway.
Following this introduction to home life in Norway, Nichols will join other young men and women from all over the world at the Lions International Youth Camp. The main feature of this camping program will be a seven-day canoe trip.
