“Some say yes and some say no,” Bruce replied. He continued that he’d visited Slaughter's again on December 6 after receiving a complaint from Helen Dixon that she’d lost a calf to dogs. He noted, however, that the calf was already buried when he went to check the kill. On December 6. Bruce said, he issued two summons to Slaughter, reminded the man of all the breaks he’d given him in the past and offered to tear up the summons if Slaughter agreed to give up the dogs before the court date.
The morning the case was to be heard, Bruce reported, he received a telephone call from Slaughter's daughter who told him “Daddy said come and get the dogs.”
When Bruce arrived, Slaughter was willing to turn over only the two females. The warden said he insisted on all three. Reluctantly and with tears rolling down his cheeks. Slaughter put the male shepherd in the back of the truck, according to the warden. “1 took them home and put all three down,” Bruce reported, adding that the two little puppies had disappeared from Slaughter’s residence by the time of his final visit.
