Slides and master plans of Hoare’s past work show simple forms, gentle and bright colors alternating, rolling curves softening the angles of modern buildings and an ease of maintenance that comes with choosing the right plants for the location. "We did a police station,” Hoare said. "We agreed to maintain it indefinitely for $10.00 per year. That's almost exactly what it cost us for a really expansive stretch of grounds."
Hoare believes that a less tangible part of his profession is to provide people with a sense of their place among natural surroundings. “1 believe that man is profoundly influenced by his surroundings,” he said. “That's why we all live in Rappahannock."
