(Jur sister state, West Virginia, has a statewide cased gun law. And “WestBy-God-.Virginia” is notQrious/or.its free spirited, gun-totmg mountaineers. If they can do it there without fear of gun control leading to gun registration leading to gun confiscation, why can’t we do it here? Concerned citizens of Rappahannock may be lulling themselves into a false sense of security if they believe that action by the game commission to equalize the deer season and prohibit running deer with dogs will solve our problem with road hunting. We believe that these two measures may alleviate the problem somewhat but solve it? No.
Look at the deer harvest figures for the past season. In little Rappahannock County, records show about 1,300 deer legally killed and checked. That's only the official tally and doesn't include illegally taken deer but according to game commission biologists, that still works out to at least four bucks per square mile of forested area.
Now look at the harvest in neighboring Fauquier with an area more than twice the size of Rappahannock. It was approximately 1,400 while Culpeper County, half again as big as we are, reports a kill of less than 600.
We have the deer and where there’s deer, there will be hunters, whether the season is two weeks, three weeks or six weeks.
