Maddox, a resident of the county.
The court records say nothing of Kitty’s life in servitude. They don’t identify the father of her babies. On most of the crinkled old pages, Kitty doesn’t even have a last name. She’s just Kitty, “a person of colour.”
The records don’t say whether Samual Maddox was a kind or a cruel master. They say only that he died in the fall of 1837. His will was admitted to record by the county court at its November term of the same year.
Afl to Wife
“Being of sound mind and disposing memory and knowing the uncertainties of life,” Samual bequeathed “unto my beloved wife Mary Maddox my whole estate, real, personal and mixed, to do and use as she may see proper during her natural life.”
He also ordered that “if there should be anything left at the death of my wife,” his nephew, also named Samual Maddox, would inherit the remainder of the estate.
