The special committee on hunting abuses and Rappahannock’s board of supervisors took a first step this week toward resolving the county’s crisis with slob hunters.
Putting pressure on the game commission to outlaw running deer with dogs and to bring the 12 day season west of the Blue Ridge in line with the 43 day deer season east of the mountains are steps in the right direction but we’re afraid those steps will stop far short of bringing an end to road hunting.
The problem here is the loaded gun on the front seat of pick-ups and cars that cruise our back roads, the drivers watching and waiting to shoot a buck or doe on posted property. It’s a problem across the entire state and it calls for a statewide solution. Until the question of what to do about that loaded gun is addressed, we have no real solution for eliminating slob hunting.
The answer lies in a cased gun law for Virginia.
It’s not going to be a popular answer. Opponents will scream “Gun control!” but it isn’t gun control — it’s hunter control.
There is precedent for this type of legislation. We already have a cased gun law in effect on game commission property and in national forests. Hunters there must have guns cased except during the season for specified species of wildlife.
