Corporate Tax

In a 32-6 vote, the Senate approved a bill Monday that would raise corporate taxes •by $96.2 million over the next two fiscal years to offset a portion of the federal tax cut that took effect last year.

Sen. Edward E. Willey (DRichmond), the bill’s sponsor, said it was necessary to recover revenues the state will lose as a result of the federal tax cut.

The bill would impose a one-half percent surcharge on corporations with income under $100,000, and a onepercent surcharge on corporations learning $100,000 or more.

Sen. Charles L. Waddell (D-Loudoun) supported the bill. Senate Minority Leader William A. Truban (RShenandoah) opposed the measure, while Sen. Nathan ] H. Miller (R-Rockingham) was absent and did not vote.
