“We’re falling into the old American trap,” interjected committee member J. J. Dwyer. “If you have a problem, write a few more laws. That's putting the cart before the horse!” he maintained.
Since his appointment to the special committee, Dwyer said, he’s been deluged with calls from county residents complaining of two specific hunting abuses: road hunting and trespassers.
Virginia already has laws on the books to deal with both—three specific trespass statutes and four on road hunting, according to Dwyer. The code also specifically delegates authority to enforce those laws, he said.
“We hear excuses why it’s not being carried out. The game warden says htf>has no authority and the sheriff says he doesn’t have enough manpower—that it’s up to a citizen to file a complaint.”
