Mary executed a deed of emancipation in February, 1843, and shortly thereafter, went to Pennsylvania, taking with her Kitty and the children "and settled them as free persons in said state.” There they remained until July, 1845, “when they were taken in Pennsylvania and brought back to Virginia and this county,” the jury concluded.
