Major Simmons added that the game commission biologist reported a prohibition against running deer with dogs would not affect the deer harvest.
Keim noted that law currently makes it illegal to discharge a firearm within 300 feet of the road.
"It should be more specific,” he said, suggesting the law be changed to prohibit (1) hunting within a specified number of feet from the road and (2) the discharge of a firearm towards or across the road.
He also proposed that game wardens be given general police powers, enabling them to make arrests for violations of that law. (The statute that makes it illegal to discharge a firearm within 300 feet of the road is contained in the criminal law section of the Virginia Code and not in the hunting law section. Therefore, only sheriffs department personnel and state police are empowered to make arrests for violations.)
