Virginia Fletcher Wood's will divided her assets —$1,610,718 plus 10' 2 acres at Fletcher's Mill with large main house, guest cottage, garage and five outbuildings— into two parts —the Virginia Division ot the American lancer Society to get one halt and "the state of Virginia organization or foundation engaged in research concerning ailments of the heart and heart trouble" to get the other.

The portion designated to go to heart research was claimed by the American Heart Association's Virginia affiliate, the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia.
At the same time. Virginia Wood's heirs argued that they should receive half the estate because the heart research bequest tailed due to indefiniteness.
