In spite of several adverse weather conditions this vear. many local gardeners as well as commercial growers are reporting good yields in their berry patches. It’s hard to improve upon strawberries eaten plain or with cream, but by your sixth or seventh quart you may want a little variety.
First, some history:
Many years ago the settlers, coming ashore in Massachusetts, found strawberries growing bountifully along the Eastern Seaboard and in the notheastern part, of the continent. Moreover, the Indians were actually cultivating the strawberry in 1643. It is thought that the modern strawberry is a distant cousin of the Chilean strawberry.
The strawberry is indigenous to the climates and soil types of Virginia. They grow here in great abundance from the Eastern Shore to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
