Borer
Each year, many Rappahannock homeowners are upset to find that the dogwood borer has invaded their dogwood trees.
John A. Weidhaas Jr., Virginia Tech Extension entomologist, warned dogwood • lovers that preventative measures are best to fight the insect that tunnels under the bark and limits the trees’ growth. Once the borer is in under the bark and in the tree, little can be done, he said.
During winter the larvae tunnels under the bark, transform to pupae and emerge as adults in the spring and summer. The peak of adult emergence seems to occur in late May and early June.
