Pond Management Clinic
A Farm Pond Management Clinic will be held Friday, June 11, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Effingham Plantation. 14103 Aden Road, Nokesville.
Sponsored by the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District (PWSWCD) in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, the program will examine all aspects of pond management.
Adam Crist, district conservationist with the Soil Conservation Service, will explain pond site and design considerations. Prince William County Extension agent Larry Blair will discuss aquatic weed control and maintenance of dam vegetation.
Fishing licenses, rodent control and pond safety will be covered by Dan Lass from the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries. James McHugh, also with the Virginia Game Commission, will be on hand — w ith his fish-shocking boat to demonstrate its use.
The bulk of the program will be presented by Louis A. Helfrich. associate professor and Extension specialist of fisheries at Virginia Tech. His topics will include fish stocking and population balance, water quality and general farm pond management. In addition, there will be an aquatic weed identification session for those who bring samples to the clinic.
