Republicans Settled The Republicans, on the other hand, have presumably settled on a candidate. He is First District Congressman Paul Trible, who apparently will have no opposition for , the nomination at the GOP convention. Rep. Trible is 35, bright, ambitious and full of zeal for his undertaking.
He has been running unofficially for the Senate for nearly two years.
Still, some of the Republicans - and many independent conservatives - are a mite grumpy about Rep. Trible. His critics regard him as a little too young, too ambitious and over-zealous. But more important, they harbor the brooding suspicion which the candidate denies - that if Sen. Byrd had not stepped down, the youthful Congressman was gearing up to oppose him anyway.
