As of May 1, 1982, the U. S. Department of Agriculture assigned a brucellosis classification to each state according to the prevalence of the disease in the state’s beef and dairy cattle herds.

Maryland is one of 10 states in the “Class Free” category. Virginia, with a relatively low incidence of the disease, falls into Class A.
