Buie Problem
Of course, with the convention only a few days away, they have had a rather basic problem. Since the withdrawal of Del. Owen Pickett from the race three weeks ago, they had not been able to find anyone who was willing to seek the nomination. In recent days, however, several candidates have surfaced who are either declared or willing to be drafted, and from among this number, one must conclude, a nominee will emerge.
At midweek the declared list included state Sen. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount, Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Horan and Del. Floyd Bagley of Prince William.
Almost declared or available for a draft were former Attorney General Andrew Miller, state Secretary of Human Recourses Joe Fisher, retired Lt. Gen. Samuel V. Wilson of Rice and Seventh District Party Chairman George Gilliam of Charlottesville.
