Both the Democratic and Republican parties will hold their state conventions during the weekend just ahead.
The Democrats will gather in the Roanoke Civic Center, the GOP in the Richmond Coliseum. It will be the first time in the history of the state, so far as we can discover, that the two parties have held their conventions at the same time.
The main task facing both is nomination of a candidate for the U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Harry F. Byrd, Jr., and each party is approaching this task in a somewhat grumpy mood.
