SS Number

A Must

Many young people in the Culpeper area are planning to take their job after school is out, and one of the most important things they have to do is to get a Social Security number, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper said recently.

Most employees will not hire a person unless he or she has a Social Security number. Therefore, Hundley said, it is important to have a number before applying for a job.

A person must submit documentary evidence of his or her age, identity, and citizenship or immigration status. A person 18 or older must apply in person.

The best evidence of age and citizenship is a birth or baptismal record made before the person’s fifth birthday. Immigration and Naturalization Service documents can be used to show immigration status.

Examples of evidence of identity include a driver’s license, school ID card, voter’s registration, school record, report card, insurance policy, membership card in youth organization, or any other document giving identifying data such as physical description, photograph, or signature.

The Culpeper Social Security office is located at 806 N. Main Street and the telephone number is 8253500.
