At the budget session this year, school board chairman Beverly Massie repeated an offer she has made several times in the past, in volunteering the school board to meet with the board of supervisors to discuss school issues. In view of the new curriculum mandated by the state, the supervisors should take her up on that offer and soon.
We support the tougher curriculum. The changes will do more to put Virginia’s public schools back on the track of providing quality education than will a hundred minimum competency tests. But the changes are going to cost money and some of it at least will have to come from county coffers. The board of supervisors should begin working now with the school board to determine just how much our schools are going to need in 1984 to take the lead in the push for quality education.
