Rappahannock residents have three thrift shops within easy reach. By far the oldest is the Washington Ladies Auxiliary Thrift Shop run for the benefit of the Washington Fire Company and Rescue Squad. Mary Ellen Burke, vicepresident of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, said that the shop is at least 25 years old.
For 15 of those years, Mrs. Burke has been volunteering at the shop and for many years before that volunteered in the summer when she vacationed here with her husband, Charles, at their home on Blue Ridge Avenue.
Most popular, said Mrs. Burke, are household items - sheets, dishes, towels. “When you get a lot of household goods, they go real fast,” she said.
Mrs. Burke operates the shop on Wednesdays and the Auxiliary’s president, Ruth Clark, opens up on Fridays. Between them, the two dedicated women managed to present the Fire Company with a check of about $2,000 each year.
“Of course, sometimes it’s a little less and sometimes a little more,” Mrs. Burke said. “But it’s usually around the same amount.” She added that there’s been a steady stream of activity in the shop since her long as
