Jenkins Reunion
The families of the late Alfred and Catherine Gearing Jenkins will have their annual reunion on Sunday, August 14 at the Rappahannock Park near Washington.
Relatives and friends are invited to come, bring a picnic lunch and meet old and new friends.
Settles Plan Reunion
The Settle family reunion will be held this year on Sunday, September 11, at the pavilion in the Rappahannock County Park, across the highway from the town of Washington.
Relatives and friends are asked to bring a covered dish to the reunion dinner which will begin at 1 p.m.
Historical Society Meeting
A tour of one of Washington, Virginia’s historic homes, “The Meadows” is on tap for members of the Rappahannock Historical Society, at its quarterly meeting, Saturday, August 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring a picnic supper, including beverage, for their family and to share with others, and lawn chairs.
“The Meadows” was built about 1786 by the Mason family. It was used as a Confederate hospital during the war, and those who died there were buried out back. After the war, the house was said to be haunted, and the owner, Judge Strothers, couldn’t keep any servants, until he announced to all concerned that he had shot all the ghosts with silver bullets. Visible for many years in the attic was the graffitti written on the walls by the recuperating soldiers; but when the house was remodeled, this was painted over.
Mr. Willis Snell, the host, will open the lower floors of the home to Historical Society members and their families after the picnic.
