Ficklin doesn’t remember hearing much more than that because he himself was only 13 when his father died. “And he a poor man, and 1 mean poor. We all couldn’t stay around doing nothing,” he says. So, within three years, John was headed for the city. “It was hard times. 1 had to get out.”
Like many black teens in the middle of the depression, John Ficklin left the country that couldn’t support him. He went to Washington “to get out of the country and to make a living.” First he worked at a Silver Spring riding school, then in a dentist’s office. Opportunity arrived in 1939
