Last Friday, the Virginia Board of Education acted to combat a “rising tide of mediocrity in the public schools” by unanimously adopting a major curriculum overhaul, setting tougher standards for high school graduation, fewer electives and more required courses in foreign languages, science and mathematics.

Board member Margaret Marston, who also served on the national commission that first sounded the alarm over the quality of public education, described Virginia as “one of the states in the country that is leading the way.”
