According to Ralph, resident engineer Don Askew confirmed that Route 729 between Ben Venue and Flint Hill is “probably the most dangerous road in the county.” He said Askew didn’t think a center strijie could be painted down the center of the road but had agreed to consider lowering,, the speed limit and erecting signs warning of obstructed vision and sharp curves.
The current speed limit is 55 mph. “Nobody can possible drive it that fast but many of them try,” Ralph said, warning that a fatality will occur if something isn’t done. A lower limit will give local police a framework for controlling speeders, he added.
Ralph noted that the petition submitted to the supervisors calls for the speed to be set at 25 mph but agreed the figure was probably low. On the basis of test drives he has conducted,
