I have been thinking about Eugene McCarthy’s explanation last week of President Carter’s failure and I am a little confused. Let me get this straight:

You “lean on” an agenda, while you spread your charisma around, much like organic fertilizer.

You “hunt” or “look for” a consensus.

You can “lose” a mandate and “cultivate” an aura.

Question: If you find a consensus, can you lose it again? If so, does anyone care?
